September PTSO Meeting

Our next monthly PTSO meeting will be this Monday, September 23, at 6:00 PM in the library. Please make plans to join us as we discuss what's happening in the busy fall season and beyond. (Note:the calendar in the previous issues of this newsletter mistakenly said the meeting was the 26th; we apologize for the error!)

$$$ INVEST UPDATE $$$

Thanks to the families who have already donated, we are currently at about $48K. We still have a long way to go! Remember that without your INVEST donations, everything the PTSO does at Hillsboro couldn't happen, because INVEST makes up pretty much our entire operating budget for the year. So why not make your donation today by clicking HERE. You can make a one-time donation or make convenient monthly payments if you prefer.

Senior Photos

All seniors should make an appointment for a formal photo to be taken on September 24, 25, or 27 at Hillsboro during school hours (click HERE; you'll need to scroll down to find an open slot). This photo will be used for the yearbook and will look like these examples. This is free of charge if the student does not take other pictures. Bring a strapless tank top for the drape picture or a clean white T-shirt for the tux. It is possible to have additional photos taken during this appointment (i.e. in graduation cap and gown or in casual clothes), but a sitting fee will be required on the day of the photography. It is also possible to have photos taken at the Prestige studio in Franklin; click HERE for more information.

Bowling Team Tryouts

Last call for Burro bowlers! Final tryouts for the Hillsboro bowling team will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 24 and 25, from 3 to 4:30 at Tusculum Lanes, 5315 Nolensville Pike. Sports physicals need to be submitted through Final Forms. Final Forms is the new process for all sports physicals at Hillsboro.

Directions to Final Forms are here
Access to Final Forms is here.

The Hillsboro Players Present Much Ado About Nothing

Prepare to witness the transformation from foes to flames in the Hillsboro Players' fall play, Much Ado About Nothing! Our production is set at Leonata’s desert oasis, the Messina Motel, following the Vietnam War, where wit reigns supreme and love is a battlefield. This tale follows two sworn enemies whose witty sparring masks a deeper attraction. Amidst a backdrop inspired by the feminist movement, these unlikely lovers rebel against the very notion of romance, only to find themselves irresistibly drawn together. Join us in Hillsboro’s courtyard for our third installment of “Bard in the Yard,” as we bring this tale of love’s rebellion to life, promising a delightful journey from adversaries to allies in our groovy production of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing!"

All performances begin at 7:00 PM, but the experience opens at 6:00 PM, with food trucks and live pre-show music! Performance dates:

  • September 26
  • September 27
  • September 28
  • September 29
  • September 30

Note: We will have stadium-style seating available, but audience members are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs. Because this is a ticketed event, clear bags are required. Tickets are on sale now at www.hillsboroplayers.com

Get Ready to Get Down!

The Burro Get Down is back, y'all! This always memorable night of fun, community, and live karaoke will be on November 22, at Exit/In. You don't want to miss it! Ticket sales will begin in early October, with song sign-ups starting right after fall break.

National Honor Society Dues

Every year, NHS collects dues of $10 per student. This money helps pay induction ceremony expenses and various other expenses, allowing the organization to maintain an official chapter at Hillsboro. Dues for the 2024-25 school year will be collected primarily during the second and third quarters this year and will be collected electronically only (no cash) through SchoolCash Online within the next few weeks. Exact dates for the dues collection window will be shared to all students through their MNPS email once all required approval measures have been met. Questions? Contact Mr. Nettles at joseph.nettles@mnps.org.

Overtime Tutoring

Need homework help? Hillsboro teachers to the rescue! Overtime tutoring in the library started this week, and teachers are available to help with any subject. The times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15-3:15. Doors lock at 2:15, and students must stay the full hour.

College and Career Night

Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend Hillsboro's College & Career Night on Thursday, October 17. We already have ten colleges committed to being here, and the list is still growing, plus we will have representatives from TSAC and TN Achieves present helpful information about the FAFSA process. In the meantime, here are a few helpful links that might make for good conversation starters about college:  Our own college and career readiness coach, Ms. Angela Gilmore, has recorded a few targeted videos about college readiness. You can view them HERE, and HERE are links for students to register for in-school college visits. Ms. Gilmore has also released a schedule of upcoming in-school college visits, which you can download HERE.

One Stop Burro Shop: Donate Gently Used School Clothes

UniCycle is a school clothing recycling program that collects and distributes “outgrown, not worn out” items to MNPS students. Some awesome volunteers and partners from UniCycle and Belmont United Methodist Church have been working to get the One Stop Burro Shop cleaned up and out, organized, and ready for action! We are now accepting donations of gently used clothing that students wear to school: jeans, joggers, t-shirts, hoodies, and more. Donations can be dropped in the donation bin in the main lobby and will fill our school's One Stop Burro Shop for use by any student at any time; extras will go to the HERO Program to support students in unstable housing or be sent to another UniCycle school. What can you donate? Any clothing that meets dress code requirements! Clean out your closets – it will all be put to use by students citywide who will start their day with comfort and confidence.

  • School spirit wear!
  • Jeans, joggers, athletic or other shorts
  • T-Shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies
  • Leggings and belts
  • School uniform items, to send to another school. (khakis, solid-color polos, etc.) ALL SIZES
  • Unopened packages of new underwear! (All sizes; all kinds)

ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Concessions
Fall sports are in full swing and we need helping hands at the concession stands. This is a fun job that is even more fun if you corral some friends and sign up together! Click HERE if you can help! We also need team leads for each game. If you are interested or want more information, HERE is the sign up.
  • Spiritwear Sales
The PTSO sells spiritwear during various events, including football games. We need parent volunteers to help with this. If you are able, please sign up HERE!
  • Prospective Family (and Alumni) Tours

PTSO Teacher Supply Closet

Thank you to everyone who has purchased items for our PTSO teacher supply closet. The teachers are so grateful for this resource. We plan on keeping the list open throughout the school year to allow for restocking. Click HERE to view the list. As always, you can have items shipped directly to the school (choose Hillsboro's address during checkout), or you can drop supplies off in the front office if you prefer.

Friday Cookie Table
Cookie Fridays are one of Hillsboro's most beloved traditions. A few times a month, parents stand at a table during lunch and hand out baked treats. The "price" of a cookie? Students must tell a good thing about their day or their week. We hear all kinds of good things: my older brother is home from college this weekend, I got a 100 on my math test, I got my driver's license, etc. If you can contribute baked goods for volunteers to hand out, please sign up HERE, and thank you!

INVEST #1 2024 Kickoff

Due to limited funding from MNPS, there is always a sizable gap between the public funding Hillsboro receives and what it needs to offer a world-class education for every student. That’s where the PTSO comes in. As we mentioned last night at the Meet the Teachers event, your INVEST dollars have supported our school in some very visible ways this year, including new seating and landscaping in the inner courtyard, new stadium wraps that really enhance the football stadium, and new graphics in some hallways inside. Thank you for YOUR help in making these awesome purchases possible!

But now that we've spent that money, it's time to build up our annual fund again, so we are asking for your support today. The dollars you INVEST help support critical needs such as:

  • Advanced academics
  • International Baccalaureate program
  • College prep services
  • Teacher appreciation & faculty support
  • Sports & athletics
  • World-class visual and performing arts programs
  • Facility improvements
  • Clubs and extracurricular programming (e.g., SGA, Youth in Government, DECA, HOSA, and more)
  • Student and community events

Your dollars make a huge difference! Together, let’s make sure Hillsboro remains one of the best high schools in the city!

Thank you for making your INVEST donation today!
