First PTSO Meeting Is Next Wednesday

Please make plans to attend our first PTSO meeting of the year on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria. This year, we will be varying the days of the week for our monthly meetings to give parents who always have a conflict on a certain night the opportunity to attend. You can see the meeting schedule for the whole school year HERE.

Burro Bash Is Back!
Next Friday, August 30, we will have our annual back-to-school party, Burro Bash, which will also serve as a tailgate before the football game that evening versus Overton. The bash will be from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, and kickoff for the game (which will be football senior night too!) is at 7:00. Burro Bash will include a clubs fair, games, and other fun surprises. We will need lots of parent helpers, so please click HERE to sign up for a shift!

Still Time to Register for the PSAT/NMSQT

The PSAT, which is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program, will be administered at Hillsboro on Saturday, October 26. Registration for the exam starts August 12 and ends August 30; students who wish to register must bring $20 in cash to the ATLAS Academy (formerly AIBDP) office. More information about the exam can be found HERE, or scan the QR code on the flyer (full-size version HERE).

Reminder: Only Clear Bags and Bottles at Ticketed School Events

A reminder that MNPS has instituted a clear bag policy for all school events at which tickets are sold. Bags must be no more than 12 x 12 x 6 inches. (Clear bags with the Hillsboro Power H can be purchased in the spiritwear booth for $10!) Small clutch purses, no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” (the size of the palm of your hand), with or without a handle or strap, are also allowed but are subject to search at the gate. Also: No opaque water bottles will be allowed (no insulated bottles like Stanley or Owalla), and no juice boxes or pouches.

Stock the Supply Closets

Please consider purchasing supplies from the PTSO's Amazon wish list to help our teachers stock their classrooms and avoid having to buy items with their own money. Click HERE to view the list. You can have items shipped directly to the school (choose Hillsboro's address during checkout), or you can drop supplies off in the front office if you prefer.

Friday Cookie Table
Cookie Fridays are one of Hillsboro's most beloved traditions. A few times a month, parents stand at a table during lunch and hand out baked treats. The "price" of a cookie? Students must tell a good thing about their day or their week. We hear all kinds of good things: my older brother is home from college this weekend, I got a 100 on my math test, I got my driver's license, etc. If you would like to participate in this wonderful tradition by either handing out cookies or baking (or buying) them and sending them into the office, sign up HERE (to give everyone a chance, please sign up to hand out cookies no more than twice per semester).

Green Hills YMCA

The Teen Program at the Green Hills Y is a community resource where Hillsboro students can come after school. This year, they are hoping to offer lots of fun opportunities:

  • Group Drumming Programs
  • Culinary Classes
  • Community Garden Workshops
  • Makers Space Arts and Crafts that include Cricut Makers, Laser Cutters, and Heat Presses
  • YMCA Leaders Club
  • YMCA Achievers program (College and Career readiness, Leadership Development)
  • One-on-One Tutoring
  • ACT Prep Workshops
  • FASFA Workshops

This program is open to all teenagers in the area with a membership (click HERE to see membership options). A limited number of scholarships are available for Hillsboro students with demonstrated financial need. Students who attend will also have access to a hot meal every day and can make full use of the facilities of the YMCA.

INVEST #1 2024 Kickoff

Due to limited funding from MNPS, there is always a sizable gap between the public funding Hillsboro receives and what it needs to offer a world-class education for every student. That’s where the PTSO comes in. As we mentioned last night at the Meet the Teachers event, your INVEST dollars have supported our school in some very visible ways this year, including new seating and landscaping in the inner courtyard, new stadium wraps that really enhance the football stadium, and new graphics in some hallways inside. Thank you for YOUR help in making these awesome purchases possible!

But now that we've spent that money, it's time to build up our annual fund again, so we are asking for your support today. The dollars you INVEST help support critical needs such as:

  • Advanced academics
  • International Baccalaureate program
  • College prep services
  • Teacher appreciation & faculty support
  • Sports & athletics
  • World-class visual and performing arts programs
  • Facility improvements
  • Clubs and extracurricular programming (e.g., SGA, Youth in Government, DECA, HOSA, and more)
  • Student and community events

Your dollars make a huge difference! Together, let’s make sure Hillsboro remains one of the best high schools in the city!

Thank you for making your INVEST donation today!

Two Soccer-Playing Exchange Students Need Host Families!

The non-profit CIEE, Council on International Educational Exchange, is looking for host families for a young man from Brazil, Victor, and a young woman from Mexico, Barbara, who are coming to our area for the 2024-2025 school year. Barbara is a soon to be 16-year-old from Mexico. She describes herself as social and a true extrovert, but she says even with this, her demeanor is calm and relaxed. She doesn’t get upset easily and has strong patience. She says that she loves playing soccer and is currently playing as a mid-fielder on her local soccer team. She said that the highlight of her soccer career was scoring the last goal in her championship game. While in the USA, she would love to be part of soccer regardless if this is on the high school team or a club league. Victor is a 17-year-old boy from Brazil. He says his deepest passion is for soccer. Secondary to soccer, he also likes videos games like any other typical teenager. When asking about his hobbies he proudly says, “soccer, soccer, and watching soccer.” He also enjoys fishing as well. He is excited to come to the USA to learn a new  culture and meeting new people. He feels being part of any soccer team will help him build relationships and make friends. He also would love to join a soccer team while in the USA.

Exchange students from CIEE:

  • Speak strong English
  • Attend the local high school
  • Need a loving home and three meals a day
  • Have their own insurance and spending money
  • Share their culture with you!

This is an exciting opportunity for a soccer-loving family to host an international student this upcoming school year! If you are interested in serving as a host family and welcoming these students to our city and your home, please email Heather Haapapuro at hhaapapuro@ciee.org.

Shout out to all the parents and students who spent last Saturday morning up on ladders, behind power washers and leaf blowers, and just generally putting in tons of elbow grease to get various parts of campus ready for the new school year!
