Back to School Night Is August 20

Back to School/Meet the Teachers Night will be Tuesday, August 20, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM. Parents will have the opportunity to walk their student's schedule, meet the teachers, and get a quick introduction to each class. You'll also hear all about the PTSO's plans for the year. We'll be kicking off the annual INVEST campaign, our most important fundraiser of the year, and selling Hillsboro spirit wear. (Can you work a shift in the spirit wear booth that night? Click HERE to volunteer.) Can't wait to see everyone!

August PTSO Meeting

Please make plans to attend our first PTSO meeting of the year on Wednesday, August 28. This year, we will be varying the days of the week for our monthly meetings to give parents who always have a conflict on a certain night the opportunity to attend. You can see the schedule for the year HERE

Burro Bash Is Back!
On Friday, August 30, we will have our back-to-school party, Burro Bash, which will also serve as a tailgate before the football game that evening versus Overton. The bash will be from 4:30 to 6:00 PM, and kickoff for the game (which will be football senior night too!) is at 7:00. Burro Bash will include a clubs fair, games, and other fun surprises. We will need lots of parent helpers, so please click HERE to sign up for a shift!

Stock the Supply Closets

Please consider purchasing supplies from the PTSO's Amazon wish list to help our teachers stock their classrooms and avoid having to buy items with their own money. Click HERE to view the list. You can have items shipped directly to the school (choose Hillsboro's address during checkout), or you can drop supplies off in the front office if you prefer.

PSAT Registration Starts Next Week

The PSAT will be administered at Hillsboro on Saturday, October 26. Registration for the exam starts August 12, and students who wish to register must bring $20 in cash to the ATLAS Academy (formerly AIBDP) office. More information about the exam can be found HERE or scan the QR code on the flyer (full-size version HERE).

Friday Cookie Table
Cookie Fridays are one of Hillsboro's most beloved traditions. A few times a month, parents stand at a table during lunch and hand out baked treats. The "price" of a cookie? Students must tell a good thing about their day or their week. We hear all kinds of good things: my older brother is home from college this weekend, I got a 100 on my math test, I got my driver's license, etc. If you would like to participate in this wonderful tradition by either handing out cookies or baking (or buying) them and sending them into the office, sign up HERE (to give everyone a chance, please sign up to hand out cookies no more than twice per semester),

Summer Reading on Beanstack

Hillsboro's summer reading is on MNPS Beanstack, and there is still time for your student to log their favorite books from this summer, write a review, and log reading minutes! Staff and students will be earning badges and awards for reading this summer, and Ms. Claassen doesn't want anyone to miss out on this opportunity that ends AUGUST 16! All details are on the summer reading link that is located on burrolibrary.com or you can click HERE for our Hillsboro summer reading page!

We can't wait to meet our newest Burros! Orientation for incoming 9th graders (and their parents) is this afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will meet the Freshman Academy team, get their schedules, and have a chance to walk the halls and find their classrooms.

Burro One-Stop Shop

On Monday, August 5, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, students can come pick up their school laptops, get a parking pass (must show a valid driver's license and proof of insurance), and be assigned a locker if they want one. The Burro One-Stop Shop will be in the cafeteria (enter from the Burro Boulevard/parking garage side of the building).

First Day Helpers Needed

We need a couple more volunteers to be on hand Tuesday morning to answer questions and help guide new students and parents in and around the building. Volunteers will need to be at school from 6:30 until around 8:00 AM. Sign up HERE and thank you!

We will need lots of parent helpers to make this a party to remember, so be on the lookout for sign ups and more information about both of these events!

Two Soccer-Playing Exchange Students Need Host Families!

The non-profit CIEE, Council on International Educational Exchange, is looking for host families for a young man from Brazil, Victor, and a young woman from Mexico, Barbara, who are coming to our area for the 2024-2025 school year. Barbara is a soon to be 16-year-old from Mexico. She describes herself as social and a true extrovert, but she says even with this, her demeanor is calm and relaxed. She doesn’t get upset easily and has strong patience. She says that she loves playing soccer and is currently playing as a mid-fielder on her local soccer team. She said that the highlight of her soccer career was scoring the last goal in her championship game. While in the USA, she would love to be part of soccer regardless if this is on the high school team or a club league. Victor is a 17-year-old boy from Brazil. He says his deepest passion is for soccer. Secondary to soccer, he also likes videos games like any other typical teenager. When asking about his hobbies he proudly says, “soccer, soccer, and watching soccer.” He also enjoys fishing as well. He is excited to come to the USA to learn a new  culture and meeting new people. He feels being part of any soccer team will help him build relationships and make friends. He also would love to join a soccer team while in the USA.

Exchange students from CIEE:

  • Speak strong English
  • Attend the local high school
  • Need a loving home and three meals a day
  • Have their own insurance and spending money
  • Share their culture with you!

This is an exciting opportunity for a soccer-loving family to host an international student this upcoming school year! If you are interested in serving as a host family and welcoming these students to our city and your home, please email Heather Haapapuro at hhaapapuro@ciee.org.

Shout out to all the parents and students who spent last Saturday morning up on ladders, behind power washers and leaf blowers, and just generally putting in tons of elbow grease to get various parts of campus ready for the new school year!
