Join us for the second annual Hillsboro High School College Night on October 19, 6:00 to 8:00 PM. We will begin in the cafeteria with representatives from college access organizations and a local university who will give us an overview of admissions and financial aid opportunities. Then we will dismiss to the small gym, where you can visit with colleges and universities to learn more about what they have to offer. You will also have an opportunity to network with HHS parents who have “been there” in terms of navigating the college process, and you can pick up resources from HHS college counselor, Ms. Angela Gilmore! Whether you have a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, this event will assist with reaching your student’s college aspirations!
College Night Volunteers Needed
If you have experience with the college process or just want to lend a hand, your expertise is needed! Please consider volunteering (sign up HERE) to make this a SUCCESSFUL event for our Hillsboro students and families.
In addition to the ACT on October 17, the PSAT/NMSQT test will be given at Hillsboro on Friday, October 6 (reminder: there is no school on 10/6). Parent volunteers are needed for both tests to help meet monitoring/proctoring requirements. If you can come in either day (or both!) from 7 AM to noon, please email Dr. Suzie Carter (susan.carter@mnps.org). She is looking for 5 volunteers on 10/6 and 10 volunteers on 10/17.
Seniors will take the ACT at school on Tuesday, October 17. Every student in MNPS must take a college entrance exam (either the ACT or SAT) at least once in order to graduate, so if your senior hasn’t taken this test yet, it’s important that they do so. (Parents, click HERE if you can help with monitoring.) Juniors will do a full practice test that same day, and sophomores will focus on improving their skills on the math portion of the test.
While seniors are taking the ACT on October 17, ninth graders will participate in a professional skills fair, where they will hear from guest speakers and learn about careers and opportunities they may be interested in when they graduate. Parents, we need volunteers for this as well! Please consider coming to school that day to discuss your career/job. If guest speakers can commit to the entire time (8:00 to 11:30 AM), that would be great, but we do understand that may not be possible. Speakers should focus on the following:
- Tell their personal story
- Attendance/punctuality
- Communication Skills
- Ethics
- Initiative/Execution
- Personal presentation
If you work in a field that you think students may be interested in, please sign up HERE. Thank you!
It’s time to reserve your moment in the spotlight! The Hillsboro Getdown (Friday, November 17, at the Vinyl Lounge) will feature karaoke with a LIVE BAND. To get on the set list, submit your song choice to getdownband@att.net. Your email must include (1) the names of everyone performing and (2) a YouTube link or mp3 of the exact version of the song you want to sing. The submission deadline is October 27, but don’t delay. You don’t have to get up on stage to enjoy this fun event, of course. Information about purchasing tickets is coming soon.
Parents, you’re invited to learn more about your child’s Academy and what to expect for the 2023-24 school year!
